The short answer
A vagus nerve reset is a set of simple body-based practices, such as slow breathing and humming, that people use to help the body shift from high alert toward rest. Victoria Duarte teaches this one-hour class at Healing Arts Center, so you can learn the practices and use them at home.
What is the vagus nerve?
The vagus nerve is the longest of the cranial nerves. It runs from the brainstem down through the neck to the heart, the lungs, and the digestive organs. It is a main pathway of the parasympathetic nervous system, the part of your nervous system that is active when you rest and digest.
Why do people practice a vagus nerve reset?
In a fast-paced world, stress can become the body's default state. When your nervous system stays on high alert, you may feel tense, tired, and disconnected from yourself.
The word "reset" is a nickname. What you practice is giving your body clear cues of safety, again and again, so that slowing down becomes more familiar.
What do you practice in this class?
Slow breathing with a longer exhale
Humming, which creates a gentle vibration near the vocal cords, where the vagus nerve passes
Gentle movement for the neck, shoulders, and jaw
Grounding through your feet, your hands, and your senses
A hand-on-chest practice for offering yourself compassion
