Finding the Wall: Overcoming Blocks in Meditation
Are you struggling with meditation and wondering why you feel blocked or restless when you try to sit still? Discover how to recognize and move past the mental barriers that keep you from self-compassion and real progress.
How to Recognize and Move Past Your Inner Barriers
If you sit down to meditate and hit a wall, you don’t need to figure out where it came from. It’s faster and more useful to find where it is operating in your life today.
I sat down to meditate the other day, closed my eyes, and found clutter instead of quiet.
Underneath the clutter was a wall. I could see how it was built, brick by brick, and every brick made sense at the time I set it down. I want to be clear about that part, because I used to think finding the wall meant I had done something wrong.
Looking for the Origin is the Slow Way: Why Digging Into the Past Doesn’t Always Help
Next, I went looking for the origin: which year, which person, whatever was said to me and by whom. I could spend a whole session digging around back there and come out knowing more than when I started, while feeling the same.
The Smaller Question: Where Is the Wall Right Now? How to Identify Barriers in the Present Moment
The question that turned out to be worth asking is much smaller: Where does the wall sit right now, today? I can usually find it in the place where I go quiet just before I would have felt peace, or the place where I almost forgive someone and then don’t—for myself included.
You can find that in ten minutes of sitting still. It doesn’t require reconstructing anything.
Why Self-Compassion Has to Come From You: The Importance of Self-Kindness in Healing
Most of us have no idea how we keep ourselves from self-compassion. We notice we don’t have much of it. The difficult part is that nobody can hand it to you. A practitioner can help you locate the wall, and can sit with you while you look at it, but the compassion has to come from whoever built the thing.
When nobody is being kind to the voice that set those bricks down, it takes over the whole room, and everything you actually know gets drowned out. Then comes the part that costs the most. You sink into it and stay there instead of letting it move through, and you end up doing the damage to your own heart that you were trying to protect it from.
One Block, Several Rooms: How Mental Patterns Repeat Across Your Life
Once you’ve seen where you stop yourself, you start catching it in other places. The same block shows up in how you talk to your child, or in what you never quite ask for at work. It’s one pattern working in several rooms at once.
That’s the practice. Find where the wall is and put your hand on it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why do I feel blocked every time I meditate?
A: It's common to encounter mental walls during meditation; these often reflect patterns of self-protection or old habits. Recognizing these blocks is the first step to moving past them.
Q: How can I increase self-compassion during meditation?
A: Try focusing on gentle self-talk and noticing when you’re hard on yourself. Cultivating awareness of your inner critic can help soften it over time.
Q: Is it necessary to understand my past to move forward in meditation?
A: While understanding your past can offer insight, lasting progress often comes from noticing where your blocks affect you today and practicing present-moment awareness.
Q: How do I know if I'm making progress?
A: Progress can look like noticing your patterns more quickly, responding to yourself with more kindness, or feeling a greater sense of peace—even if just in small moments.
