What to Expect in a First Somatic Coaching Session

Sessions are compassionate, grounded, and designed to fit your needs.

Many people wonder what the first session will be like. Somatic work is becoming more familiar, but it's still common to feel unsure about what to expect. Different somatic approaches exist, and each practitioner works a bit differently.

I focus on somatic awareness, mindful attention, gentle inquiry, and compassion. If there's time and you're interested, we can include a short Reiki session to help you settle or integrate. Reiki is always optional and never required for somatic coaching.

How We Begin

Not everyone feels comfortable diving into conversation right away. Sometimes the pressure to explain why you're here or what's going on feels overwhelming, especially when you're already dealing with anxiety or uncertainty.

We can start however works best for you. I introduce myself and explain what somatic coaching is and what it isn't. If talking feels like too much in that moment, we can move into a centering practice instead. This gives your nervous system a chance to settle before we go any further.

The centering practice is simple. I guide you through grounding, breath, and presence. Sometimes this happens seated. Sometimes standing helps you sense yourself more clearly. The goal is to help you arrive in the room and in your body without needing to perform or explain anything.

Once you feel more settled, we can talk about what brought you here and what you're hoping for. We only do that when you're ready, not because there's an agenda we have to follow.

The Heart of the Session

Most of our time focuses on somatic coaching. This can include guided awareness, noticing breath or tension or areas of ease, exploring how experiences show up in the body, compassionate inquiry into what feels possible or protective, and practicing ways of responding that support your daily life.

Somatic coaching isn't about forcing insight or analyzing everything. It's a body-based way to understand how you respond to stress, fear, longing, and responsibility. The aim is to help you gently grow your capacity without overwhelming your system.

If you'd like to try Reiki and there's time, we can add a short session to help you settle or transition. This is always based on your comfort and interest.

Closing the Session

At the end, we take time to reflect on what you noticed. This helps you process the experience and gives you space to ask questions. We might talk about practices to support you between sessions, but nothing gets assigned as homework. The focus stays on supportive awareness, not obligation.

Some people prefer weekly sessions. Others come twice a month. We find a rhythm that feels sustainable and supportive for you.

Somatic coaching isn't one-size-fits-all. Each session takes shape based on what you bring that day, what you're curious about, and what feels helpful. My role is to support you with compassion and skill as you reconnect with yourself in a grounded, meaningful way.
