Somatic Coaching for Military Families: The Gift Certificate She Almost Tore Up
How somatic coaching and Reiki helped one military spouse in Virginia Beach stop bracing and start being kinder to herself. Shared with her permission.
The gift certificate sat in a drawer for months. When my client finally noticed it again, she stood there holding it, caught somewhere between tearing it up and making the call.
I'll call her Mary to protect her privacy. She asked me to share this story, because if it helps one person feel ready to schedule, it was worth telling.
Living With What Deployment Leaves Behind
Like many military families, Mary and her husband live with what his deployments left behind, the effects you can see and the ones you can't. Military life shaped their marriage, their parenting, and their home in ways that didn't end when he came back.
Several years ago, her husband started receiving Reiki alongside his other care. Mary watched what it did for him. He came home from sessions calmer, more patient, more able to be present with her and the kids.
The Fight and the Gift Certificate
Not long after, they argued over something Mary now says was silly. She started it, and she wanted the last word, because back then, getting the last word was a point of pride. Her husband ended the fight with, "You know, maybe you need to try Reiki."
A few weeks later, he bought her a gift certificate. It went in a drawer and stayed there.
The Call She Almost Didn't Make
She kept watching him come home settled and easy with the kids while she stayed wound tight. Then one day, cleaning out that drawer, she found the certificate and stood there with it.
She worried it wouldn't work on her. She worried that if she let herself get calm, the other shoe would drop. She even worried she had bad energy.
She took a breath and made the call.
What surprised her was how gently the work met her. Nobody tried to fix her. Over time, not overnight, Mary found more joy and more perspective. She started accepting herself, flaws included. The running criticism she aimed at herself, her husband, and her kids got quieter, and kindness took its place.
What Is Somatic Coaching?
Somatic coaching is a body-based approach that works with what's happening in your body as you talk, not just your words. Soma means body.
A lot of people picture coaching as talking through a problem until you think your way out of it. Somatic work starts from a different place: much of what we carry lives in the body long before we have words for it. The tight shoulders. The shallow breath. The feeling of being braced for something. Somatic coaching helps you notice those patterns and work with them, so your body gets a chance to settle.
That's what Mary needed. Not a plan. A place where she could slow down enough to feel what was actually going on, and permission to have her emotions instead of treating them like a problem to solve.
Why the Nervous System Matters for Military Spouses
Live with stress long enough and your nervous system learns to stay ready. Ready to react, ready to manage, ready for the other shoe. That readiness is useful, and it is exhausting, and it doesn't switch off just because the hard moment passed.
Military spouses know this in their bones. You hold the household together, you carry the worry, and you get very good at bracing.
Somatic coaching and Reiki both give the body a chance to come off high alert and remember what steadier feels like. None of this was about fixing Mary, because she was never broken. It's about helping the nervous system find its way back to calm often enough that calm stops feeling like a threat and starts feeling like home.
What to Expect in Your First Somatic Coaching Session
There's nothing to prepare and nothing to perform. We start slow. You control the pace, what we work with, and how far we go. Everything is consent-led, which means nothing happens without your yes.
If all you do in your first session is exhale a little deeper than you have in months, that counts. You don't have to arrive believing it will work. Mary didn't. You just have to make the call.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is somatic coaching the same as therapy?
No. I'm a somatic and mindfulness coach, not a licensed clinician, and coaching does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions. If you're carrying something that needs clinical care, that matters, and it deserves the right person. At Healing Arts Center, Erin is a licensed therapist, and I'm always glad to point you her way. Coaching can work alongside clinical care, not in place of it.
Do you work with veterans and military spouses?
Yes. Healing Arts Center is veteran-owned, and supporting military families is close to my heart. Sessions are available with a sliding scale for veterans, active duty, first responders, and their families.
What actually happens in a Reiki session?
You stay fully clothed and comfortable, usually resting while I work. Most people describe it as one of the only chances they get to do absolutely nothing and let the body settle. No belief is required for it to feel good.
Do you offer online sessions?
Yes, both in person in Virginia Beach and online, so we can work together in whatever way fits your life.
How do I get started?
You can book directly through our site, or reach out with questions first if that feels better. There's no pressure and no wrong way to start.

I'm Victoria Duarte, a somatic and mindfulness coach and co-founder of Healing Arts Center in Virginia Beach. My work is body-based, consent-led, and trauma-sensitive, built over years of walking alongside people as they slow down and reconnect with themselves. I co-founded Healing Arts Center as a veteran-owned collective because I believe care should meet people where they are, at their pace, without anyone having to prove they're struggling enough to deserve it.
My mission is not only to provide services but also to educate others about holistic wellness and complementary healing practices. Whether you're looking for relaxation, stress relief, mindfulness, or simply a safe space to pause and reconnect with yourself, I would be honored to be part of that.
