How Do You Know Your Client Is Healing and Not Just Feeling Better in the Moment
Somatic coaching is a body-based approach that helps clients regulate their nervous system, build self-awareness, and develop practical tools for managing stress and burnout. Unlike talk-based approaches, it works directly with physical sensation, breath, and movement to create lasting change in daily life.
I have been doing this work long enough to know the difference between a client who leaves my office feeling good and a client who is changing, and those two things do not always look the same.
Sometimes a client walks out of a session lighter, calmer, and relieved. They say the right things, they feel hopeful, and everyone in the room exhales. Then they come back the following week carrying the exact same weight, the same patterns, and the same nervous system responses that brought them in the first place. The relief was real. The shift was not. This is one of the most important distinctions in somatic coaching, and one that does not get talked about nearly enough.
Feeling Better Is Not the Same as Regulating
When someone finally feels heard, something happens in their body. Their shoulders drop, their breathing slows, and their voice softens. Being witnessed is a real and meaningful part of healing, and I never want to minimize that. But feeling safe in my office is not the same as their nervous system learning to feel safe on its own, and that distinction is everything. My job is not to become the source of their regulation. My job is to help them become someone who can regulate themselves, because one of those outcomes creates dependency and the other creates freedom.
So how do I know when something is shifting? Here are the five signs I watch for.
1. They Can Access Calm on Their Own
The real sign of progress is when a client can find their way back to calm outside of our sessions, in the middle of a hard day, after a difficult conversation, or when an old pattern gets triggered. When that starts happening, even imperfectly and inconsistently, it means the nervous system is building an internal resource that belongs to the client, not to the room we sit in together.
2. They Can Feel What Is Happening in Their Body
Many people who come to somatic coaching have spent years living from the neck up. They think their way through everything, push their body's signals aside, and have become so disconnected from their physical experience that they cannot tell you where stress lives in their body or what calm feels like. When a client starts to notice sensation, tension in their chest before a hard conversation, their breath getting shallow when they are overwhelmed, warmth in their shoulders when they finally relax, that is meaningful progress. Feeling the body is not a small thing for someone who has spent years not feeling it. It is the foundation that everything else is built on, and the moment they catch their own signals before I point them out is one of the clearest signs that something is shifting.
3. They Have More Capacity to Sit With Difficult Emotions
Early on, difficult emotions can feel like a wave that pulls a client under. Over time, with consistent somatic work, they start to develop what I think of as more room inside themselves. The emotion is still there but it is no longer the only thing that is there. This is not about suppressing feelings or pushing through them. It is about developing enough internal steadiness that a client can feel what they feel, stay present with it, and move through it without it derailing their entire day. That kind of capacity is built slowly and it is one of the most meaningful things I get to witness in this work.
4. They Are Avoiding Things Less
When the nervous system is dysregulated, avoidance makes complete sense. Certain people, situations, and conversations get tagged as threatening and the body does everything it can to steer clear of them. This is not weakness. It is protection. As the nervous system begins to regulate, that protective response starts to quiet down and clients begin re-engaging with parts of their life they had pulled back from. They have the conversation they had been putting off. They show up for the event they would have cancelled. They try something new without talking themselves out of it first. These moments are evidence that the nervous system is learning that the present moment is different from whatever it was protecting against.
5. They Are Finding Connection Again
Dysregulation is isolating. When the nervous system is constantly scanning for threat, being around other people can feel draining or simply too much. Clients often describe pulling away from relationships, feeling like they are too much for others, or not knowing how to be present even when they want to be. One of the most meaningful signs of progress is when a client starts to feel safer in connection. They let someone in. They ask for help without spiraling afterward. They spend time with people they love and feel present rather than performing presence. The nervous system is settling enough to allow real contact with other people, and that changes the quality of a client's life in ways that are hard to overstate.
What I Track Between the Lines
Beyond these five signs, there are quieter markers I pay attention to in every session. Has the language a client uses about themselves changed? When someone moves from saying they always fall apart to noticing they were starting to spiral and choosing to do something different, that is evidence that something has shifted. Are they making different choices outside of sessions, not because I told them to, but because something internal changed enough that the old choice stopped feeling like the only option? Can they find their way back to a regulated state more quickly than before, not perfectly and not every time, but faster and with less effort than when we first started working together? Those are the moments that tell me the work is taking root.
A Note on Accountability
I offer follow-up support between sessions because progress happens in the moments between our work together, in the middle of an argument, in a sleepless night, in the moment when an old pattern resurfaces and the client has to decide what to do with it. That is where somatic work either takes root or does not, and I want my clients to have support when those moments arrive. My clients do not just make progress in the room. They carry it into their lives, and that is the standard I hold myself to.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is somatic coaching? Somatic coaching is a body-based practice that helps clients regulate their nervous system, recognize stress patterns, and build practical tools for emotional balance and self-awareness. It works with physical sensation, breath, and movement rather than relying on talk alone.
How is somatic coaching different from therapy? Somatic coaching is present and future focused. It does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions. Instead it helps clients develop nervous system regulation skills and body awareness for everyday life. Many clients work with both a therapist and a somatic coach at the same time, as the two approaches complement each other well.
How do I know if somatic coaching is working? Progress shows up in observable ways. You can access calm on your own, you notice what is happening in your body, you have more capacity to sit with difficult emotions, you avoid things less, and you feel safer in connection with others.
Who is somatic coaching for? Somatic coaching is for anyone navigating burnout, cumulative stress, or nervous system dysregulation, particularly those who feel stuck in patterns that talking alone has not been able to shift.
