Why Traditional Relaxation Fails the Nervous System (and a Safer Way to Healing)
If you’ve ever sat in a meditation class, closed your eyes, and felt a sense of panic rather than peace, you aren't "doing it wrong." You are experiencing a natural survival response. At Healing Arts Center, we understand that for a nervous system stuck in survival mode, traditional relaxation techniques can actually be more harmful than good.
Here are five key reasons we choose a Trauma-Informed Mindfulness and Meditation approach.
Silence as a Gateway: When Meditation Becomes a Trigger
The most overlooked reason why meditation can be difficult is that for a survivor of trauma, the act of turning inward can itself be a trigger. When we remove external distractions, the abrupt silence can serve as a gateway to emotional flashbacks. If a practitioner tells you to "just breathe through it" without understanding this mechanism, they are inadvertently asking you to stay in a state of re-traumatization.
2. The Trauma Trap: Forced Stillness vs. Survival Mode
When the nervous system is stuck in Hyper-vigilance, stillness feels like vulnerability. To a body trained for survival, closing your eyes can feel like dropping your guard in a danger zone. Instead of calming down, your brain ramps up, commonly leading to:
Intrusive thoughts or a "racing mind."
Physical tension or a powerful urge to move.
Dissociation or a feeling of being "spaced out."
The Power of Invitation: Why Language Matters
Many wellness spaces use commands like "Close your eyes." For a survivor, this can feel threatening. Victoria, with 15 years' experience, invites rather than demands, keeping you in control.
3. Respecting Your Faith and Your Body
We deeply respect your faith. For us, Trauma-Informed Mindfulness is a means of connection—a way to build a relationship with your physical body so you can identify the "early warning signs" of anxiety before they become overwhelming. We provide the physiological tools to help you know exactly what to do when you feel anxious or triggered.

FAQ: Is Trauma-Informed Mindfulness Right for You?
1. Why does traditional meditation make me feel more anxious?
It’s not you—it’s your nervous system. For many, forced stillness acts as a trigger for hyper-vigilance or emotional flashbacks. When you remove external noise, the internal "noise" of trauma can feel overwhelming. Our approach focuses on Nervous System Regulation, ensuring you feel safe before we ever ask you to be still.
2. How is this different from a regular meditation class?
In a traditional class, you often follow commands. In a session at Healing Arts Center, you receive invitations. With 15 years of experience, Victoria uses specific language—like "I invite you to soften your gaze"—to ensure you always remain in control. We prioritize regulation (feeling safe in your body) over relaxation.
3. I’m a Veteran or First Responder. Will this feel too "airy" for me?
Not at all. With Mark's 25 years of experience as a Navy SEAL, our center is built on a foundation of grit, practicality, and a genuine understanding of what high-stress service does to the mind and body. We do not ask you to check out. We give you the tools to check in safely.
Victoria has years of experience working with the Special Operations Forces community and military spouses. Following the Virginia Beach Municipal Center shooting in 2019, she provided mindfulness and Reiki support to those impacted. She is now extending that same support to the ODU community.
Every session is paced around your comfort and your needs. Nothing more is required of you than showing up.
4. What if I can’t close my eyes or sit still?
Then we don't ask you to. Stillness is a skill we build toward, not a requirement for entry. We work within your Window of Tolerance, which might mean starting with eyes open, focused on external anchors, or using gentle movement. We titrate the experience so your system is never overwhelmed.
