From Performing to Peace: Learning to Give Yourself What You Need
When she first came to me, she had every reason to believe she was doing well. She had a successful career, a daughter who had everything she could want, and a life that looked whole from the outside. By every measurable standard, she had "made it."
An emptiness lingered beneath the surface that she could not explain—a drive that never felt satisfied no matter how much she achieved. She kept reaching for the next milestone, the next promotion, without ever stopping to ask herself why the finish line kept moving. It was not until we began working together that she started to see the pattern: she was not chasing success, she was chasing the safety of approval. Her body, however, had been keeping a very different account of this chronic stress.
The Weight She Had Been Carrying Alone
She arrived carrying a narrative of silence. Before finding her way to somatic coaching, she had been involved in a spiritual community that appeared welcoming at first—inviting her in with open arms—only to later turn on her. Rather than offering genuine sanctuary, the group exploited her deepest insecurities. This type of experience is far more common than our cultural conversation currently acknowledges, and the resulting betrayal trauma often leaves the nervous system in a state of chronic hyper-vigilance.
In our sessions, the dynamic shifted. She felt heard because I simply believed her. I intentionally did not push her to recount every painful detail or "deepest secret"—a tactic often used in harmful groups to create a false sense of loyalty or dependency. Instead, we focused on helping her body return to a state of internal safety.
As her nervous system began to settle, her perspective cleared. She gained the capacity to recognize where her environment was truly unsafe and began to distinguish between her own protective responses and the toxic behaviors of those around her. She was no longer performing her pain for validation; she was reclaiming her agency.
The Moment Everything Shifted
After guiding her through a moment of self-regulation, I offered a reflection that became the foundation of our work: "All I did was guide you. You were the one who comforted yourself. I just created space for you to do that in a way that helped you hold yourself in dignity. You can always do this by yourself without me."
The look on her face was recognition—the capacity she had been searching for was already within her. This awareness is a core element of reconnecting with your body's wisdom, a practice that allows us to translate physical tension into emotional insight.
Somatic Writing: A Tool for Reconnection
As explored in my previous blog, Somatic Writing with Sensory Words healing often begins when we stop "thinking" about our stress and start listening to the sensory awareness of our bodies. For this client, writing became a way to document her body's account of her life, free from the need for external approval. By engaging in sensory-focused reflection, she began to:
Identify "Freeze" Responses: Recognizing when she was performing a role out of fear rather than desire.
Release Stored Tension: Using the page to hold the weight of what her body had been carrying.
Claim Her Narrative: Moving from a "character" in someone else's story to the protagonist of her own life.
What Somatic Coaching Revealed
As her nervous system began to regulate, the shifts were profound:
Presence over Performance: She became more present with her daughter, showing up in ways she hadn't accessed in years.
Internalized Valuation: She stopped measuring her worth by her next achievement and began to recognize her value from within.
Breaking the Burnout Cycle: She developed a relationship with her body that allowed her to recognize when old stress patterns were resurfacing and meet them with awareness.
Why This Strategic Path Matters
Many people arrive at the Healing Arts Center in Virginia Beach having already done significant work on themselves—reading the books and attending workshops—yet they still feel a persistent sense of being overwhelmed.
Somatic coaching goes underneath the "thinking" mind, addressing the place where the body stores what the mind cannot process. We offer a holistic wellness approach that is personalized, boundaried, and designed to move at a pace that feels safe. With 15 years of experience, I am committed to providing care that is current, skilled, and deeply considered.
Key Takeaways for Your Healing Journey
Success isn't a proxy for safety: High achievement can often mask a nervous system stuck in a "survival" response.
Agency is the goal: True somatic support doesn't create dependency on a practitioner; it helps you recognize the capacity for comfort already within you.
Boundaries matter: Professional care should never involve coerced vulnerability or a push to share "secrets" before you are ready.
Listen to the body's account: Your mind might say you are "fine," but chronic stress often speaks through physical tension and emotional emptiness.
We are here when you are ready.
